Living in your home during a remodel can be tough. There are a lot of moving parts, but if you decide it’s finally time to make your current home the home you’ve always wanted, and for any reason you need to stay while it’s being renovated – Here are a few tips to help through the process.
Firstly, acknowledge that your home life as you know it will be turned on its head. The routes you take between rooms, your bathroom schedule, even having your morning coffee will be disrupted, and we acknowledge that adds a lot stress to your life. If we had the ability to renovate your home in a way that was completely undisruptive, we would exercise that in every project. Our goal is to do the absolute best we can to accomplish this: we guarantee that we will clean up at the end of every day and leave every space as we found it! Regardless of promises we make, we still want you to be prepared for the disruptions that will occur. We are happy to talk through any concerns you may have regarding this, and figure out how we can respect your space as much as possible.
Secondly, scheduling will become your best friend. And not just in terms of coordinating with our team about when we will be in and out of your home, but also within your family’s personal lives as well! If you’re renovating your master bathroom, that’s a whole sink, shower, and toilet your family will be missing that are essential for preparing for your days. Sit down with your significant other and your children to determine who needs the bathroom when, and for how long, to save yourselves from future headaches and lost time. If you’re renovating a space such as a kitchen or a living room, it can help to schedule another space to serve the purpose of the room that is being renovated; for example, one room may have to function as your kitchen at one time, then a lounge space at another. This will help add some normalcy to your temporary new home life.
Finally, and to branch off the end of our last point, remember this is all temporary! All the debris, all the noise, and all the disruption will eventually be gone from your life and give way to a beautiful new addition to your home. It sometimes feels hard to remember to search for the light at the end of that tunnel, especially if the renovation being done is a big one. But all that work is necessary for achieving the home of your dreams. Think about how much you will love cooking in your new kitchen, or getting ready for the day in the bathroom you have always wanted. A few months of work and having to readjust the way you operate in your home will all pay off the second you lay eyes on your newly renovated space.
We know how difficult it can be to accommodate debris, dust, and strangers in your home as renovations are underway, but we also know and want to assure you that it is worth it so that you can live in the home of your dreams. We at Cedar Mill Group are here to walk you through every step of the process, and we can’t wait to help introduce you and your family to your new home!
